This week, I have included an article about girls playing the role of secretary in school projects, app trends we can expect to see in 2015, and even some ideas to help get you through snow days.
Here's to a year filled with positive learning experiences for you and your families!
How does Aaron Becker, award-winning creator of Journey, approach parenting?
Aaron Becker's books make your want to be a kid again. And his perspective as an artist and father may make you want to add layers to raising your kids, too. Aaron joined me for an Experts on Air session, and here are 5 of my favorite learnings from that chat. For example, he never took an art class as a child, but his mom did help him in one incredibly important way that he says fundamentally shaped him into who he is today.
When do kids really get the moral of the story?
While it might make us feel better to know that our kids are consuming media that teaches important lessons, it turns out they are unlikely to really understand the moral of the story at a young age. In hearing this story, I did wonder about the impact of added parent dialog about the content, relative to kids watching or reading in a vacuum. Also, I was shocked to learn about some of the most popular shows for 9-14 year-olds!
I enjoyed reading this list about what to expect for children's apps this year. I'm happy to learn there will be increases in parent dashboards and interactivity, more apps on Android, among other promising trends.
Are team assignments in school reinforcing traditional gender roles?
When kids determine their own roles in group projects, they tend to choose girls to be the secretary. This article explores the short- and long-term impact of the "Secretary Effect," in the lives of kids and adults.
What to do when your child is a perfectionist?
Our son is not a perfectionist, but I have noticed that he occasionally doesn't take risks or make guesses because he is afraid he will "get it wrong." This article explores why our kids may demonstrate these behaviors, and gives straightforward advice to help mitigate them.
